THE THUNDERBAY INCIDENT
So a couple of weeks ago we thought life wasn't quite exciting
enough so r2k, doggy, theferg and myself thought it would be a
great idea to drive up to Thunder Bay for a long weekend with
some friends that are still in school (lakehead). Everything
was fine until 390Km from Thunder Bay 15 mins from this small-ass
little town called "White River" all shit broke loose.
Coming out of an downwards S curve, we hit black ice right across
the apex of the turn doing 90km/h (the speed limit on Hwy 17).
4 wheels, none of them with traction, swerve left, swerve right
and left again. Almost grab it when the back end drifts about 30
degrees out, then we were in the shit. Across the oncoming lane,
backend grabs and we do a flat 180. We're now pointing the way
we came, still doing about 80-85km/ h going BACKWARDS.
Back end makes contact with the "guard rails" (the cable type ones)..
BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM as we take out 5 of the rails, airbags go off,
all the windows blow out and cold air is blowing through the car at
speed. I thought that was bad, until I saw the sky and horizon start
dropping - we're going off the edge of the road, down an escarpment
(ravine) BACKWARDS. The cables from the rail skid up and over the
front of the car, clipping off everything external and not doing
shit to keep us on the road. Not only is it like a 70degree incline
on this ravine, there's also BIG rocks covering everything.
After that it's a blur, but putting it together, we dug the back of
the car in against a dinner table sized rock moving that about 10
feet, flipping the back end-over-end to front, then rolling once or
twice down to where we hit a tree with the side of the car and
stopped, pirched against a rock and a tree, with another 45ft drop
off below us. THANK GOD FOR TREES.
Items from the car was thrown all over the place, we found cell phones,
cans of coke, timbits 75 feet from the car, all over the place.
Glass everywhere, in our hair, pockets, pants. The worst that
happened was that one my friends in the back seat was hit with
an XBOX that we had in the car at the time. We were all sore, but
walked away with nothing more than scratches and bruises.. we came
very close to not being here.
R2K's father's Hyundai Sonata (decked out LX) we were driving is a
writeoff (and it WAS a V6 btw).
